Discovering Your "Chazown" among Vacillating Values

ChazownI'm reading a great new book just out from Craig Groeschel, the pastor of LifeChurch.tv.  The book is called "Chazown" (which is kind of a weird title).  But actually, "chazown" is the Hebrew word meaning a dream, revelation, or vision.  The whole book is about discovering vision for your life from a biblical point of view.  I'm really enjoying it so far, and would recommend everyone that reads MMI grab a copy and read it... it fits right along alot of the things we discuss here.  Here, for example is a short section called "Vacillating Values".  Craig writes:

Living with integrity is hard.  The world tries to coerce you to adopt its values.  Don't forget your spiritual enemy loves to distract you from God's best.

But we're citizens of heaven.  God gives us the basis for our values.

If only we all truly believed that.

I recently experienced one of my most disturbing weeks in ministry.  I surveyed about fifty Christians, asking two questions.

First, I asked, "If money were no object, what would you do for the rest of your life?"

I fully expected answers such as:

"I'd volunteer my time at the Crisis Pregnancy Center."

"I'd adopt children from a third-world country."

"I'd mentor young inner-city kids."

Sadly, the most common answers orbited around personal comfort.  Instead of Spirit-led, selfless responses, virtually everyone gave answers like:

"I'd quit working, buy a nice car, a new house, a boat."

"I'd travel."

"I'd hire people to help me around the house."

Then I asked, "Besides ministering to your family, what do you believe is the number one, most important thing God wants to accomplish through you?"  To their credit, the people were pretty honest.  But I found their most common answer heatbreaking.

It was "I don't know."

How dismaying!

Do we really think God sent His Son so our greatest life goal would be a new boat?  Do we think He created us uniquely and wonderfully, with all of our gifts and passions, so we wouldn't have to work another day in our lives?  Or even worse, just so we would stumble around for years, ignorant of our reason for existence?

And we wonder why we're so unfulfilled.

We say one thing -- we want God's best, for example, or we don't want to waste our lives -- but we do another.

What do you treasure?  What do you stand for?  What would you fight for?  What do you know is so important that you'll let go of everything else in order to grasp it?

God has put your personal core values deep in your heart.  They're there for a purpose, to help you aim for and hit the right target for your life.

It's time to know exactly what they are.

---

Amen, Craig.

I would encourage all of you to get a copy of this book and read it for yourself.  It's very challenging.

That is good Todd, I will have to check it out at my bookstore.... I am getting rid of my credit cards...

If the Lord gave me $350,000 do you know what I'd do... I'd pay off everything I owe, sell my business, start a ministry account, invest some of it for the Lord to draw intrest, build a youth center here in our town along with a crisis center, help these teenage girl who are pregant instead of having an abortion, pay for they're Dr. bills to have the child, adopt the child from them and then place the child for adoption to a nice home to a good loving Christian Home, allow the mother to stay in contact with the child. Invest all my time in the lives of our youth because no one seems to care about them...

What is the #1 thing God wants to accopmplish through me???? invest my time in my community, to let people see Jesus Christ in my actions, to know that they are truly loved, and that he truly cares about them... To be a servant to people, to wash those feet who are not deserving of being washed, but to be a servant to all...

I am currently attending Life Church (Edmond Campus), and Pastor Craig has truly been a blessing. Of course I got the book and have begun reading it. If money was no object, I would quit what I am doing now and start writing books with spiritual themes and also spend a lot more time with my children and grandchildren that God has blessed me with (currently eleven).

This book has already been such a fantastic resource for me. On Monday, our main computer teacher quit due to life circumstances. I (we) were in a bind. Computer training is a vital part of our program. Last night when I was reading this book, Chazown, the Lord impressed upon me how I was to incorporate what Craig was saying into my "lesson plans" for today and tomorrow.

I am not a computer teacher. Yet, with the Holy Spirit as my guide, our time today in computer class was meaningful and purposeful. It was not a waste of valuable time. The participants told me they cannot wait to see how we take what we did today and continue it tomorrow. They were smiling as they continued to talk about it as they walked out of computer class. Oh, did I mention that we had an issue with printer just as they were going to print their assignment? One of them fixed it because *ahem* that not my strong suit either! We all laughed.

Before class started, I could not help but overhear their conversation as I walked into the room. One of our participants used to sell drugs. Last night her past came banging at her door asking to be let in. She mentioned how she cried out to God for His strength to get through it. How she now has goals for her life that have nothing to do with how much money she can make selling drugs or scoring her next hit. The lesson plan for today could not have fit better. I cannot wait either to see how He is going to use the one for tomorrow!

What's more important? Watching lives being transformed daily all because of His amazing grace.
